Program for Delinquent Male Youth

Program Objective:

To reduce further involvement of youth in the juvenile justice system. To help youth be accountable for their actions, develop victim empathy and take greater responsibility for the quality of life in their community. To develop measurable competencies that help youth to become more responsible and productive members of their communities.

Program Highlights:

  • Located in Bensalem, PA (tokens for public transportation and transportation from central location in Philadelphia provided)
     
  • Operates year-round, Monday through Friday
     
  • Offers two distinct academic and vocational programs:
     
    • High School Diploma Program (Diploma and Certificate of Competency in one vocational shop)
       
    • Job Training Program (Certificate of Competency only)
       
  • Offers four vocational shops:
     
    • Building Maintenance and Repair
       
    • General Carpentry
       
    • Auto Services
       
    • Culinary Arts
       
  • Special Education services
     
  • Treatment team approach organized around vocational training
     
  • Educational program accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
     
  • Nutrional development program, includes breakfast and lunch

General Components of Treatment:

  • Individualized educational and treatment planning based on previous academic experience, levels of achievement, credits earned and social service needs
     
  • Small class size; teacher to student ratio is 1:10
     
  • All classrooms equipped with computers and Internet access
     
  • Comprehensive social work services to youth and family
     
  • Individual and group counseling
     
  • Monthly in-home visits with family
     
  • Full-time Job Developer
     
  • School-to-Work Program in which stduents must complete 120 hours of employment prior to graduation

Admission Criteria:

  • Male youth, ages 14.6-18 years
     
  • Youth must be adjudicated delinquent
     
  • Full scale IQ of 70 or above, minimum of 3rd grade reading level
     
  • Youth must be able to fully participate in treatment, without severe restrictions from physical activity (medical clearance may be required)
     
  • Youth with a history of abusive behaviors, serious sexual offenses, fire setting or severe emotional, psychological or psychiatric disorders will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
     
  • Youth must have a parent or guardian who is willing to participate as a member of the treatment team
