THE MITCHELL PROGRAM
An intensive 120-day residential treatment program for delinquent
male youth, focusing on farm based education, followed by 6 months
of community-based aftercare

Program Objective:
To reduce further involvement of youth in the juvenile justice system. To help youth be accountable for their actions, develop victim empathy and take greater responsibility for the quality of life in their community. To develop measurable competencies that help youth to become more responsible and productive members of their communities.

Program Highlights:
- 24 bed residential program located on the campus of Saint Gabriel's Hall, in Audubon, PA
- Incorporates the care and maintenance of a farm and farm animals
- Victim empathy groups
- Competency skills development groups
- Crime Repair Crew
- Community service including collabortions with the Philadelphia Zoo, the Mural Arts Program and other community organizations

General Components of Treatment:
- Year-round, on-site academic school program
- Small class size; teacher to student ratio is 1:8
- Weekly on-site family visits
- Individual, group and family counseling
- Psychological and psychiatric evaluations and services available
- Medical and dental services
- Aftercare planning and services which includes weekly visits for the month, daily phone contacts, individual and family counseling, community referrals, facilitating school placement, monitoring school attendance and referrals to GED programs
- Restitution program

Admission Criteria:
- Male youth, ages 13-18 years
- Youth must be adjudicated delinquent
- Full scale IQ of 70 or above, minimum of 2nd grade reading level
- Youth must be able to fully participate in treatment, without severe restrictions from physical activity (medical clearance may be required)
- Youth with a history of abusive behaviors, serious sexual offenses, fire setting or severe emotional, psychological or psychiatric disorders will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
- Youth must have a parent or guardian who is willing to participate as a member of the treatment team in both the residential and community-based phases of the program
